Book Club ABOUT THE BOOK

Interweaving real and fictional elements, The American Boy is a major new literary historical crime novel. Set in England 1819: Thomas Shield, a new master at a school just outside London, is tutor to a young American boy and the boy's sensitive best friend, Charles Frant. Drawn to Frant's beautiful, unhappy mother, Thomas becomes caught up in her family's twisted intrigues.

Then a brutal crime is committed, with consequences that threaten to destroy Thomas and all that he has come to hold dear. Despite his efforts, Shield is caught up in a deadly tangle of sex, money, murder and lies – a tangle that grips him tighter even as he tries to escape from it.

And what of the strange American child, at the heart of these macabre events – what is the secret of the boy named Edgar Allen Poe?

Book Club ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Andrew Taylor writes his chilling crime novels in a converted outbuilding near the cosy, straggling Victorian cottage that he shares with his wife and two children. He lives in a small town in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

A self-confessed writing and word ‘addict’, he is the author of ‘twenty plus books, at a conservative estimate’ and the recipient of two Ellis Peters Historical Daggers (for The Office of the Dead and The American Boy) and a John Creasey Memorial Award (for his debut novel Caroline Minuscule).

NATIONAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND NLB

Imagine not being able to get hold of the book all your friends are saying you must read. Newspapers, magazines and TV shows are telling you it’s one of the best books they’ve ever read, but you can’t read it, let alone express your views or vote for it.

Thankfully that is not the case with Richard & Judy’s Best Read! Once again, the National Library for the Blind (NLB) has worked closely alongside Richard & Judy to make sure blind people can take part in the Best Read and is producing the short-listed books in Braille to sit alongside each book club programme.
