“Southampton City Libraries is an enthusiastic supporter of Reading Groups. We provide members of staff to lead the groups and recommend titles for them to read, supply multiple copies of the chosen books and organise author visits and other promotional events to inspire the group members to experiment with different authors and genres.
The Saturday Reading Group that reviewed ‘A quiet belief in angels’ by R.J.Ellory for the Richard & Judy Book Club has been meeting on a monthly basis for several years. Its excellent mix of background, age and gender always leads to a lively discussion. No matter what book is being discussed, everyone always has their own opinion, or has picked up different nuances in the plot that other group members have missed. It is fascinating that one book can generate so many different opinions and lead a discussion off on such a variety of tangents!
As well as encouraging new members to join, many of the original group still attend every month. Their enjoyment of the Reading Group has led them to join other groups (Shakespeare, Tolkien and Poetry Reading Groups are also thriving), meet socially at the local theatre and also to use the Library to develop other recreational and educational pursuits, such as Learn Direct courses and Open University degrees ! But most importantly, they meet as a group of friends who love books and get a definite buzz out of sharing their enjoyment of reading with other like-minded people.”
New members are always welcome! Please see our website for further details:
