“Our group has met for three years now and we have achieved an amazing fifty reads in that time. We have a core of eight people with a good spread of ages from thirty to retired who are the 'powerhouse' of the group, and then there are those who come when work allows or as visitors from outside: over the past few meetings we've welcomed an author from a major publisher, a journalist, visiting academics and we are currently taking part in an Open University research project looking into the way reading groups approach reading.
We're hungry for books - it's a sort of feeding frenzy when we get hold of one, especially if it's a good one - whether classic or modern - but some, inevitably, we spit out!
We have our own voice in our Newsletter and website, where some of us write reviews on what we've read each month. We've already had a couple of publishers approach us to read their new writers and like everyone out there in the reading groups, we're on the look out for 'hot' new authors, who might be willing to come and cut their teeth on us. That's what we're about; enriching our own shared experience of reading, but also, in our own way, looking to put something back into the reading community.”
