There was a very strong line-up for the opening heat.

Representing Great Britain was the in-form Neil Channing, Ireland's captain Padraig Parkinson put himself straight into the action and Germany's highly rated Thomas 'Buzzer' Bihl was also selected. Holland's Hans Ritburg was the first player out in 6th place and he was quickly followed by USA's Chad Brown in 5th place.

Sweden's Johan Storakers took control at this stage eliminating Parkinson in 4th place and Bihl in 3rd. This left Storakers and Channing heads-up.

It turned into a marathon tussle lasting 80 hands until finally Channing prevailed to give Great Britain the perfect start to the tournament.
