Poker Nations Cup - Programme 2 Match Report

Programme 2

Heat B saw some big guns around the table, most notably Team USA's Phil 'Unabomber' Laak and probably Germany's strongest player, Philip Marmostein.

The game began with some gutsy play, yet despite surviving with a flush on the river against Germany's pair of queens, Team Denmark was the first to leave the second heat. Team Holland's Thierry van den Berg hit a two pair on the flop and Tune Seidelin walked with just a single point gained for his team.

Germany had high expectations, and were desperate to improve on their disastrous start to the tournament. But it was not meant to be. There was heart break for Marmostein as Sweden's Johan Storakers hit a two pair on the river.

Shortly afterwards a confident Van den Berg sent Phil Laak packing with a pair of kings on the flop – another disappointing evening for the USA. After surviving some aggressive play by Great Britain's John 'Jonny Texas' Hewston and some Swedish slickness, Team Holland found themselves low on chips and it wasn't long before Thierry van den Berg left in third place after Johan Storakers hit one pair on the turn card and another on the river!

For the second time in the tournament the heads up would be left to Great Britain and Sweden. In an exciting heat finale Sweden's Storakers took the lead, impressively hitting three queens, closely followed by three fives. Team Great Britain fought back and regained the lead with a full house over a straight. Jon Hewston never looked back and won through, hitting a two pair on the flop. With 32 points from just two heats, last year's winners are flying!
