Roland De Wolfe comes from a gambling family, and used to play pool for money as soon as he looked old enough to get into pubs. He didn't just play pool; he hustled pool – one-handed.

A journalism course and an interest in gambling sent him into the world of covering poker tournaments. It wasn't until later that he put what he learned by observation to use. He realised he was a good poker player when he won a tournament where the other two players in the final three were Sir Clive Sinclair and Al Alvarez.

After winning first prize in the Gutshot Poker Festival, he went on to make a money finish in the $1,000 No Limit event of the 2005 World Series of Poker. In July 2005, he won first place in the Grand Prix de Paris event of the World Poker Tour (WPT)'s fourth season, defeating former champion Juha Helppi in the final heads-up battle.

In April 2006, he finished third out of 605 runners in the WPT $25,000 Championship event at the Bellagio, winning over $1,000,000. In October 2006, De Wolfe won the European Poker Tour (EPT) Dublin event, and the 554,300 euros first prize. In the process, he became the first person to win an event in the WPT and the EPT. De Wolfe has also competed in both the World Speed Poker Open and the Poker Grand Prix.

As of 2006, Roland's total live tournament winnings exceed $2,900,000.
