![]() On Tuesday, January 15th, the classic TV poker series Late Night Poker returns to Channel 4 Late Night Poker 2008 returns to Channel 4 screens in its original format after a 6 year absence. The programme that started the extraordinary recent boom in poker ran for 6 series between 1999 and 2002. This series kicks off in style with a hilarious one-off Celebrity Special. Around the table are actors John Thomson and Stephen Mangan, Channel 4 presenter Hardeep Singh Kohli, 80's pin-up Cleo Rocos, comedian Dave Gorman and infamous drugs smuggler Howard Marks. In the main series, 49 players consisting of 39 professionals and 10 online qualifiers compete for an overall prize pool of $335,000 with the winner taking away the $125,000 first prize. There are 7 heats with the winner automatically qualifying for the final and the runner up going through to the semi final. The winner of that semi final secures the 8th seat at the final table. The field includes some of the old Late Night Poker favourites as well as some of the young rising stars on the professional poker scene. The old favourites include Surinder Sunar, Marcel Luske, Joe Beevers, Barny Boatman, Jac Arama, Kourosh and former Late Night Poker champions Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott and Padraig Parkinson. The new breed include 19 year old Norwegian poker sensation Annette Obrestad and young Brits Praz Bansi, Karl Mahrenholz, Maria Demetriou and Jen Mason. The series is presented by journalist and poker player Victoria Coren. Former Late Night Poker champion Simon "Aces" Trumper shares the commentary with Victoria. Guest co-commentators include US pro Robert Williamson III and top British pros Roland de Wolfe and Marc Goodwin. Watch Celebrity Special on Monday January 7th, 11.50pm on C4. |
