French Polishing
French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in high gloss, deep colour and tough surface. It consists of applying many thin layers of shelbac using a rubber pad (fad). The process is lengthy and very repetitive. The finish is obtained through a specific combination of different rubbing motions (generally circles and figure-eights), waiting for considerable time, building up layers of polish and then spiriting off any streaks left in the surface. French polishing can be used in many ways today from restoring antique furniture to getting rid of marks on wood around the house.
French Polishing expert, Dan Higgs has a different technique altogether. He pours methylated spirits on the table, lights it with a match, and then finishes it off with french polish. To find out more about Dan click here.
