The last laugh
Friday 29th October

Well the jokes are over, the laughter dried up and the comics departed - the end of the Kings of Comedy is finally upon us!

But worry ye not, we still have to proclaim the final winner of our DVD punchline competition - the man or woman, boy or girl, animal or mineral who supplied the funniest ending to a selection of opening gambits.

And today, we are swollen with pride to announce the irrevocable last competition champion - one Alex Collier.

Congratulations sir for ending the line, 'There once was a vegetarian butcher...' with the retort: "He treated his animals well, and even took them out for drinks. Sadly, they went down the pub and got slaughtered."

Alex was not the only member of the public to take part this week, so please rise for the best of the rest, as documented below:

'A racing driver lost his nerve...'

...and three bones from his hand. And a lot of blood. Sian Bevan

...driving a shopping trolley in Tescos. Neil Bennett

'There once was a vegetarian butcher...'

...If you asked for a chop, you got a Karate demonstration. If you said "mince" he gave you a pack of Polos. Woe betide anybody who asked to see his rissoles. Jane Willis

'Two comics go to a nightclub...'

...One says: "I hope somebody reads me tonight." Chris Eales

...take all their clothes off and shout: "How's about that for a comic strip?" Jane Willis
