We caught up with Chris O'Dowd who told his favourite things about playing Roy, and how he'd like to see Roy and Jen's relationship develop...
How is Roy different in this season from Season One?
Erm, I don't know. I think that Jen being around has had an influence on him so he's not quite as
socially inept as he once was. It's more like now he's a teenager who knows what the right thing to
do in social situations, but just hasn't perfected it, whereas before he was like a puppy - I've
just made that up now but it seems to make perfect sense!
What is your favourite thing about playing Roy now?
Erm, I guess I know the character a bit more now, more than anything else the fact that Graham knew
who he was writing for meant there were less stumbling blocks.
In the first series it was more about introducing the characters, but there's less of that in this
series, people know them.
Has it made difference that the three of them are friends now rather than
antagonists?
Absolutely! I think that when we watched the last series back there was a concern most of the
episodes were me and Jen shouting at each other across the desks. It was important they started to become friends as it's more realistic those people would kind of get on fairly well, or reasonably well. It was helped change the tone of the show, and it would've probably turned out like that anyway.
You wouldn't really get into those situations with people you didn't like?
Exactly, I mean why the fuck are they going out, why are they drinking together if they didn't like each other?
I think there's still some uncertainty I guess with each other, because the four of them wouldn't have hung out, but the resignation of being stuck together and just having to deal with it, and being happy enough with it is probably enough to allow them to go out as a group.
In the first episode this time we spend time out of the office, which is probably a good thing. When the guys are in the office they're all in their own way slightly weird
but there's no contrast because there's nobody else there, whereas out of the office you can see
the contrast, you can see the embarrassment. There's no embarrassment factor in the office because
why would I be embarrassed in front of Moss? I do think it helps when they get out.
