James Sutton Interview: part two

In our final goodbye interview with James Sutton (John Paul), we talk about McDean, who he's going to miss the most from the show and which other character he'd have liked to play...

Who are you going to miss most from the show?
I’ve been really, really lucky with the people that I have been put with. Obviously the McQueen family, you know, we all kind of started at the same time and we have quite a close bond. I've been doing a lot recently with Jake (Kieron) and Barry (Niall) and obviously Guy (Craig)... Jake and Barry I will really miss though because we have done some really exciting stuff. I'm going to miss all the production people, everyone behind the scenes...you know, camera guys and sound guys and I'll miss Bryan and his team too.

Which storyline have you enjoyed the most?
I really enjoyed the stuff when I first arrived. There was a lot of stuff with Emma Rigby (Hannah) which was really beautifully written I thought, it had a really nice quality to it. I had stuff with the students as well a few months back which was really good fun. I've been really lucky, its all been great.

How is John Paul's departure going to affect the rest of the McQueens?
I don't know, they are all caught up in their own little storylines really. You know, Jacqui and Tony and Tina and Dom have kind of got their baby surrogate thing and Michaela obviously does her own wild things, so I don't think life will change that much for them.

If you could have played any other character who would it be?
Probably Niall. I think that he's just a wicked character and so well written. He's not just a bad guy, there's all these elements, he's a very interesting character. A great villain is one where you can see it from their point of view and that's really exciting. if you can sympathise or empathise with a villain that's really amazing, very clever.

The McDean storyline was definitely one of the biggest of 2007 and one for which you won an award. Did you have any idea that it was going to be that big when it first started?
No. When I first got the part and knew about the storyline I didn't realise it would be that big but I did have an inkling that it would be quite important. I was getting scripts through when my character was straight that were just brilliant; you know falling in love with his best friend. I kind of thought then that this might be something that people would grab hold of and run with a bit. I mean, to win awards and stuff well you never plan for that.

When you first started did you know that John Paul would be gay?
I knew from the casting that John Paul was gay but I didn't know how it was going to be handled. I didn't know that he was going to have a girlfriend or fall in love with his best mate and that was just so beautifully done. And then also the stuff when Craig was kind of realising that he had these feelings for his best friend as well. It was really, really interestingly done.

Is there any chance of John Paul returning in the future?
Never say never.
