As Max lays dead in OB's arms, Steph and Tom struggle to come to terms with what's just happened. Niall is arrested and is taken to the Police Station along with Steph, Tom and O.B. Eventually Niall is released without charge and having given their statements the others too are allowed to go home. A chance meeting in the hallway of the station gives Niall the opportunity to apologise to Steph and explain that it was all a terrible accident. Steph, unable to even look at Niall, compounds his guilt by letting him know exactly where she sees the blame of her husband's death to lie. O.B. is asked by Steph to perform the unenviable task of returning to the wedding reception at The Dog to tell the partygoers the bad news.

Niall runs home looking for peace but is found by John Paul and Kieron. They try to offer solace but Niall, disguised by a veil of grief, allows himself a rare moment of candour as he scolds their hollow sympathies and even their affair. Stricken by a compulsion to explain himself to Steph, he disappears into the night in search of the widow. Kieron follows Niall and although he is unable to convince him to come home, he is able to deflect Niall away from Steph, for now...
O.B. returns to a packed party at the Dog and slowly gets the news of Max's death through. Everyone is predictably disconsolate but Cindy has more difficulty coming to terms with it than most, acting shell-shocked and unaffected. Eventually everyone leaves and the family and friends are left to pick up the pieces of a shattered day. As the night wears on Tony begins to search for a scapegoat and unsurprisingly he settles on Niall. Darren, Jack and O.B. are forced to make Tony face up to Max's death and begin to grieve properly.
Upon hearing of Max's death and seemingly incapable of consoling Niall, John Paul goes to see Myra in an attempt to reconcile with his mother. Forgetting, momentarily, their feud over Kieron, the two are happy to be family again. It doesn't take long for Myra to remember her son's betrayal and she demands that he never see Kieron again or risk losing his mother forever. Will John Paul choose a life with his new love over his own mother?
