100 GREATEST WORLD CUP MOMENTS

1958-1978   1978-1982   1986-1990   1994-1998

1986

48.6 Brazilian debutant Josimar's 30 yarder into the top corner to beat N Ireland goalie Pat Jennings.

49. Josimar picks his way through a crowd of Polish defenders to score from an impossibly acute angle.

50. Captain Michel Platini's chip over the Italian goalie helps take the French through to the quarter finals.

51. The fastest dismissal (56 secs) for Uruguay's Jose Batista for this foul on Gordon Strachan of Scotland.

52. Both feet, four defenders, no problem for Michael Laudrup as Denmark larrup Uruguay.

53. Third game of stage one, and England have to beat Poland to go through to the second round. Gary Lineker poaches what he later describes as the most important goal of his career.

54. The Hand of God … but great build-up play by Diego Maradona too on the way to the most infamous goal of all.

55. Diego beats most of the England team - some of them twice - on the way to his wonder goal.

56. Substitute John Barnes comes on with 20 mins to go and his cross for Gary Lineker's goal nearly rescues the game for England against Argentina.

57. A flying scissor kick from Manuel Negrete for Mexico against Bulgaria after a great 1-2 on the edge of the box. The Aztec Stadium, and the whole of Mexico, went nuts.

58. This time it's most of the Belgian team Maradona goes past on his drive into the box where he places with his left.

1990

59. Baggio just keeps on going after a 1-2 on the halfway line, beating two defenders. A quick check, he spots that Scillaci is offside and decides to finish on his own.

60. Kevin Sheedy's accurate left foot shot against England secures a draw for the Republic of Ireland.

61. Colombian goalie Higuita goes on a run up the wing and is tackled by Cameroon's Roger Milla who dribbles in to score.

62. Against England, Cameroon's Ekeke starts on the wing in his own half, gives and gets then powers forward to feed Roger Milla. Milla lays the ball on and Ekeke surges through to loft the ball home.

63. Ireland's Pat Bonner saves a penalty in the shoot-out against Romania and David O'Leary (who'd never never taken one before) holds his nerve as Ireland progress to the quarter finals for first time.

64. In extra time against Belgium, Gazza surges forward from inside his own half and wins a free-kick forty yards out. Platt, on as substitute, meets the chipped kick on the spin and volleys in to clinch the game.

65. A long simmering battle between Holland's Rijkaard and Germany's Voller boils over: Rijkaard spits at Voller and both men are sent off.

66. Littbarski's corner for Germany against Holland eventually finds Brehme, who curls the ball in form the corner of the box.

67. England's Chris Waddle spots German goalie Ilgner off his line and his long-range shot is only just tipped over.

68. England's Parker delivers the ball to the edge of the box, where Lineker somehow bamboozles three German defenders to score by firing back across the German keeper.

69. "Have a word with him". Gazza is booked, meaning he will miss the next match. On come the waterworks and Lineker gestures to Robson on the bench.

70. That penalty shootout. Pearce shoots straight at the goalie Ilgner. Then Waddle blasts over, having already hit the post in normal time.

71. Italy's Toto Schillaci finishes a sweet move against Argentina, started by himself, after Vialli's fine shot is saved.

72. Jürgen Klinsmann's outrageous dive with extra salmon leap which leads to the first ever sending off in a World Cup Final for Monzon of Argentina.
