1. Pele, aged 17, flips the ball past a Swedish defender and scores in the final.

1962

2. The mass battle of Santiago between Chile and Italy: two great punches thrown, two sent off.

1966

3. Bobby Charlton runs from half-way and unleashes a 25 yard screamer against Mexico to kick start England's sluggish World Cup campaign.

4. In a massive upset, dentist Pak Do Ik scores for outsiders North Korea to send the Italians home.

5. Argentina captain Rattin, finally leaves the field after a ten minutes protest at his sending off. Stickler Alf Ramsey is so incensed, he stops George Cohen from swapping shirts.

6. The magical Eusebio scores the third Portugese goal against Brazil.

7. Bobby Charlton's second goal to finish off Portugal and qualify England for the final.

8. Did it cross the line? Geoff Hurst’s second goal of the final careens down off the cross bar and means Russian linesmen don't go down too well in Germany.

9. "Some people are on the pitch". Hurst wellies that ball as hard as possible, so that if he misses the ball would end up in Row Z and waste some time.

10. Scorer of the first German goal in the final Helmut Haller hangs on to the ball.

11. Jeff Astle shoots wide from six yards against Brazil.

12. Brazilian Jairzinho’s cross, Pele’s header, time stands still, Banks’ save.

13. Bobby Moore dispossess Jairzinho before calmly playing the ball out of defence to Terry Cooper.

14. Pele's attempted lob form the halfway line against Czechoslovakia misses by a foot.

15. Brilliant control as Pele chests the ball down and scores from the volley against Czechoslovakia.

16. Jairzinho beats 4 Czech defenders before scoring.

17. Bonetti's blunder from Beckenbauer allows the Germans back into the game.

18. Pele's masterful dummy which left the Uruguayan goalkeeper sprawled.

19. A brilliant move begun by Clodoaldo ends with Pele barely glancing up before weighting a pass for Carlos Alberto to lash the ball into the Italian net.

1974

20. The Cruyff turn. The first time it is seen in the World Cup, against Sweden.

21. Cruyff runs onto a chip into the box, shapes to shoot with his right before jinking left and scoring with his left against Argentina.

22. Rivelino aims his 30 yard free-kick against East Germany at his colleague Jairzinho in the wall. Jairzinho ducks and the ball flies into the corner of the net.

23. Brazil are awarded a free kick against Zaire but before it can be taken, one of the Zaire players runs at the ball and boots it upfield.

24. Gerd Müller’s goal from a tight angle to beat Holland in the final.
