31 year old tax office worker , John Carpenter was the first person to win a million on the US version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. For his final question he was asked which US President had appeared on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. He paused for a moment and then used his 'phone a friend' option to ring his father. Not because he didn't know the answer - Richard M Nixon - but because he wanted to brag that he was about to win a million dollars.
