Self-employed Sussex accountant and arch-quizzer Trevor Montague won the impressive title of 15-to-1 Champion in 1997. Unfortunately he was almost immediately sued by William G Stewart after it emerged that, contrary to the rules, he had appeared on 15-to-1 not just once, but twice before. In 1990 he had been knocked out. In 1992 he re-appeared in disguise as "Steve Romana" an Italian complete with slicked back hair, earring and casual T-shirt. This deception was only spotted after an eagle-eyed member of the quizzing community spotted the resemblance on a cable re-run of the show. Montague had to return his prize, a £3000 fifth century BC Greek vase, and pay legal costs of £3500.
