The A To Z Of Quiz
A trawl through the cultural history of TV quizzing, from Ask The Family to XYZ

A TO E

A is for Ask The Family
Fast paced, teatime BBC quiz for middle class nuclear families only. Each team – usually the Tufton-Faquars from Bromley and such like - consisted of two bookish parents and two horror children in NHS glasses. Featured difficult general knowledge questions and a cool round where you had to identify an object from an extreme close up (usually a lathe or ornate hat stand). Hosted by Robert Robinson. He gradually lost his hair over the fifteen year run (1967-82).

B is for Bamber
Like Sting, Prince, Madonna, and other top level celebrities with just a single brand name, Bamber (real name: ‘Bamber Gascoigne’) needs no introduction. Probably the brightest quizmaster of all time. Could happily reel out words like didaskaleinophobia* but would hilariously fumble pronouncing ‘Duran Duran’. Ah bless.

(*fear of going to school)

C is for the Chair
Mastermind’s famous leather interrogation spot, modelled on the experiences of creator, Bill Wright, who was interrogated by the Nazis during the war. Hence also the Germanic music and the lugubrious choice of locales: empty churches, Bury St Edmunds etc.

D is for Dumb Britain
Private Eye’s hilarious column documents the howlers blurted by quiz contestants under pressure. Some examples:

Anne Robinson: Which month in the Gregorian calendar is named after Augustus Caesar?
Contestant: June.

AR: Name the doctor who founded children’s homes and orphanages in Britain in the late 19th century.
Contestant: Dr Doolittle.

AR: Which D is an area of Holland famous for its distinctive pottery?
Contestant: Denmark.

AR: What item of photographic equipment has the same name as the private chamber of a judge?
Contestant: Tripod.

E is the E-Millionaire Show. Okay, not exactly a quiz, but famed for handing out the largest grand prize in UK TV history - £2 million smackeroons to two dotcom wannabies. In light of the e-crash, we were going to be cynical and say ‘HAH. WHERE’D ALL THAT DOSH GO THEN?’ but actually both winning sites – schoolsforschools.com and youreable.com – are doing quite nicely thank you.
