Episode 5: The Charity Dinner
It’s the social event of the year and the Cheshire women are in a spin getting the must-have frock and all the necessary beauty treatments in preparation. Terese however has a huge distraction outside of these rituals, namely what to do about Jacqui. She confronts Jacqui, asking her to leave town and is affronted when Jacqui tells her where she can go,
Tiffany Anne unwittingly offers the solution to her dilemma. Darren lets slip that the girls had become entangled with Italian boys on the trip and Terese wastes no time in conveying this information to both Trinny Jamieson (Tiffany-Ann’s Mother) and the head mistress. Jacqui is run out of town. However, Terese unprepared for Darren’s reaction when she catches him sobbing in the study having just found out. She’s driven her rival off – but at what cost to their marriage?
Meanwhile John’s Avalon Basin plans look dodgy. His erstwhile buddy at the Council, Smeaton, has been replaced by a new planning officer, an earnest, ambitious young Asian man called Haq. Haq isn’t one to be paid off and also has a mission to open up an investigation about a fire at a block of flats that occurred years ago, it’s apparent that John would rather this wasn’t re-opened.
Beth’s in her element as she organises the entire charity ball and basks in the limelight. She gets right up the perfectly designed noses of the Cheshire women when at the black and white themed event she turns up wearing a scarlet dress. She also manages to incur John’s ire when she sports Leo on her arm. This upsets Lauren too, who can’t believe her mother’s with that creep. Lauren’s drunk and upset about Russell is pushed her over the edge. As the fireworks explode overhead, so does Lauren. She grabs Leo’s car and crashes it.
While John’s pursuing his errant daughter, Cassidy is escorted home by a sleazy friend of Justin and Lauren’s, Coll. Coll’s known in the area for providing much of the ‘toilet entertainment’ necessary for these events. Cassidy hasn’t had a good evening having turned up wearing a dress that is clearly inappropriate and trashy. But much worse than that, Beth delights in pointing out that John can’t marry Cassidy as he’s made a pact not to.
