Episode 1: The Christening

As construction boss John White prepares for his son’s christening and opportunity to launch his new trophy girlfriend onto Cheshire society he discovers the bank has frozen his credit. Attributing the problem to a building site planning delay he takes drastic action and demolishes the surviving facade. As he does so his estranged wife, Beth White, plays golf and drinks heavily in an attempt to quell her grief at being supplanted. Cassidy Tallow, “the new model”, has an embarrassing moment herself when Donna, one of the catering assistants at the event, recognises her as “Gail” from the flats next door. Cassidy initially denies it but the girls grow closer during the course of the day and by evening Cassidy decides to take Donna out on the local scene and show her how to identify and lure her own millionaire.

The christening party breaks-up in disarray when Beth makes a loud uninvited appearance and comes to blows with Cassidy. In the aftermath John discovers that the bank are still not happy with his finances and – unless he can raise £500,000 by the end of the week he is going to go bankrupt. John attempts to borrow the money from his oldest son Darren White but falls out with him over the firm’s succession. His younger son Justin White has spent the first half of the day taking coke with his wild child sister Lauren Jamieson who has just returned from travels abroad. Following the row at the christening he looks after his mother and reveals to Beth that John faces imminent bankruptcy. Fearing that the firm she and he worked so hard to build up is being squandered for the sake of a ‘slut’ she sends Justin to John with an offer of cash help. However John sees this is an attempt to control him and spurns the offer.

As the day ends he visits a mysterious and catatonic patient, Naomi Greengrass, in a local clinic then returns to Whiteoaks, his mansion, to ruminate on the bankruptcy which is now inevitable.
