About Generation Next

Peter Slater
Don't worry about finding things to do this August, just watch Generation Next - a whole month of programming celebrating new creative talent - on Channel 4 instead.

Over four weeks there are loads of brilliant shows to watch from the best new writers, directors and onscreen talent across comedy, drama, documentaries and news.

Generation Next kicks off with the launch of new series Tonightly on 1st August - a heady mix of stand up and regular sketches produced and performed by brand new on and off air talent.

Hollyoaks
The laughs continue to come thick and fast with Channel 4's unique televisual experiment Comedy Lab, which will be returning for an 11th year.

Coming Up is the only talent scheme in the UK where emerging film directors and writers have the opportunity to make an authored drama with a guaranteed network broadcast.

This series of seven films will be broadcast every day in the last week of August, and star a range of actors from Alfie Allen to Imelda Staunton.

Continuing with the drama theme, Hollyoaks recently launched a Generation Next competition to give one budding script writer the opportunity to write an episode of the show.

Over 300 applications were received and the winning episode, written by Jamie Austin, will be aired on 29th August.

Film4 will also be screening a short season of films highlighting new directors, particularly those identified with mumblecore - young directors shooting fast, low-budget films, often on digital cameras and arranging their own distribution. There's a real emphasis on finding future favourites at FrightFest too.

If all of that's not enough, First Cut, the documentary strand showcasing bold, bright and original films by up-and-coming directors, returns with a new run, plus the award-winning documentary film We Are Together - by a first-time director - will be shown too.

That's not forgetting Channel 4 News of course which has been on a national search for new journalists, giving them the opportunity to produce original stories.

Four films wll be broadcast on Channel 4 News during August - all reported or produced by new journalists selected on the strength of their story ideas.
