Water Babies

Day 9, 25-Mar-06

Going into the 100m relay, just two points separate all three teams.

Will yesterday's victors have the strength to race home with the title - or will Team 2004 show their strength lies in the water? As Steve Bunce remarked, "We have seen greatness in the water tonight", but which team will prove themselves the greatest of them all?

After nine days' events, Javine showed no signs of fatigue, while Kirsty - a year out of competition, and her closest competitor - paced nervously poolside.

Kirsty took the lead from the off, with Javine surrendering at least a second with a deep dive. All that changed at the 25m mark when Javine recovered with a tumble turn, leaving Kirsty behind to push off the side.

As the Machine powered home with a time of 35.04s, former-Champ Kirsty came in second with 36.65s. With just over a second between them, Javine admitted a debt to her fellow competitor, saying: "Kirsty's strong so she pushed me."

Julia, for Team 2006, took third place at 39.2s, while the remaining swimmers registered times nearer the 40s mark.

At the end of Round One, Team 2006 took the lead with 10 points, followed by Team 2005 with seven. Team 2004 languished at the bottom with three, but as a sensational Round Two revealed, anyone could take it at this early stage in the competition.

The male athletes went into the Diving with very different form. While Shane had never jumped from the 10m board, Jade had shown style at that height just four days earlier - and Chesney, the oldest competing male - was the first Games athlete to attempt a 10m jump.

In the first competition dive, Plat'num was the only athlete to jump from the 7.5m board; all the others went up into the treetops to contend for a possible 90 points.

Shane's effort stood out from a run of over-rotated dives, earning 84 of the available points. Jade, in particular, surprised the crowd when his descent quickly flipped over into a crab-style position.

A confident Shane went on to deliver the most difficult dive in Games history - executing a terrific one-and-a-half somersault from the 7.5m board, for which he was rewarded with 108 points.

Supported by a strong showing from Romeo, Team 2004 took the victory - taking 11 of the available points and rising to the top of the leaderboard.

But with only two points between them, no one can be sure of victory, and it remains to be seen which team will be crowned Champion of Champions.
