Father Ted
Father Ted
Father Ted Crilly
If any of the residents of Craggy Island can be referred to as "normal" then it's Ted. At first glance it seems his head is screwed squarely on his shoulders. He's not a big drinker, he's not an avid rollerblader and he has a firm grip on reality.

However if he does have one vice it's the acquisition of wealth. Well maybe two; the acquisition of wealth and his utter contempt for his fellow priest and arch-nemesis Father Dick Byrne. Oh, and sweet smokey cigarettes. "The Lourdes Incident" which gets referred to on any occasion which involves Ted and money is the reason he has been banished to Craggy Island. Apparently "the money was merely resting in his account", which seems to suggest that he stole a load of money off a very sick child.

You could call Ted the brains of the Parochial House but that really wouldn’t be saying much as he lives with an alcoholic and a child trapped in a man's body. But occasionally his genius shines. For example by combining an unconscious Father Jack with a remote control wheelchair and a pair of fake arms, he is able to cheat his way to victory in the All Priest Over 75 indoor football match.

Ted mainly spends his time mentoring his best friend, Father Dougal. As Ted is a man of the world and Dougal is a man of Craggy Island, there is plenty of wisdom to pass on. Like explaining the difference between near and far, which things exist and which don't and of course the difference between dreams and reality.

Deep down he likes his existence on Craggy Island and the company of his best friends, Father Jack and Father Dougal. Not even the promise of a parish in America can make him depart the much loved little island, and it's lovliest girls.
