Solicitor to Garage MC
Solicitor MC

Faker George Lubega

I'm back working as a corporate lawyer.

I still shave my head. I'm much more open to street culture than I was before. Lawyers have a very insular existence, and we tend to assume that what we do is very important. Doing Faking It has made me realise that there is a lot more going on in the world.

I suspect that I'll never MC again. The people who do it well have done it since they were kids and they are very natural at it. I found MCing terrifying. I don't want to be terrified as a hobby. I have done a lot of things in my life - speaking in important cases, jumping out of planes - but being on stage at the Ministry of Sound was the most frightening thing I have ever done.

Faking It was the most difficult thing I have done in my life. I am very pleased I did it. It was a massive achievement. But I wouldn't want to go through that process again.

Mentor MC Creed

What's the biggest difficulty learning to be a Garage MC?
Learning when to talk and when not to talk. You can teach lyrics and catchphrases. But the difficulty is finding the balance: knowing when to shut up and let the music do the talking.

What was the biggest crisis?
Just before the test, we changed his whole script. We had to change it because there were bits that just didn't sound right, but it really knocked his self-confidence. It was a massive crisis.

Were the Pay As You Go Cartel being serious when they dressed George?
The clothes are real, but Pay As You Go went way over the top. George ended up looking more like an American rapper. They dressed him in Iceberg and I think he should have been in Versace or Prada. You see kids with an Iceberg top or jeans, but you wouldn't see them in Iceberg everything. I think what happened was that Pay As You Go were given a budget, and they wanted to spend it all.

How confident were you immediately before the test?
I wasn't confident at all. I was very worried to tell the truth. Garage MCing is a performance thing so it all depends how it goes on the night. I knew he could do it, because I had seen him do it well at home... but then I had also seen him flop at the Ministry.

Could you train anyone to be a Garage MC?
I reckon I could train anyone up. I do workshops where I train all sorts of beginners. The thing is, there are all sorts of MC's: comperes, hosts, rappers. Not all MC's can do all these things. That means an MC can get away with being a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, or with, say, not rapping at all.

Did you enjoy being involved in Faking It?
Yeah, I loved it. It was a journey for me as well. It was great to go to Jamaica and meet lots of relatives I had never met before.

Do you think you could learn to Fake It as a lawyer?
Oh yeah ... easy, mate! Half of the lawyers out there are Faking It.
