Ex-Navy Officer to Drag Queen

Faker Spence Bowdler

I'm just waiting around, waiting to join the police in December.

Faking It will help me in the police as it improved my tolerance levels. I have always been tolerant but Faking It made me learn not to take people at face value. Getting immersed in the gay scene was very strange to start with, but now it doesn't bother me at all. Also, it affirms what I have always thought, that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything.

I haven't got any plans to do anymore drag. I'd love to sing again if the opportunity came my way, but no, no more drag.
Mentor Dave Lynn

What's the biggest difficulty learning to be a drag queen?
There's two things. Firstly, it is difficult not to look like a man in women's clothing. You've got to change the way you walk, the way you sit, the way you hold yourself. Secondly, it is difficult to divorce the drag from all the sexual things that people mistakenly believe go with it.

What was the biggest crisis?
The hardest moment was asking Spence to put on a dress. The wig was hard, but we managed to laugh about that. Spence was a strong character, which I admired, but he had bigger tantrums than any drag queen I have ever known.

How confident were you immediately before the test?
I thought he would do it. Before the test I was watching him on CCTV. He was in the changing room chatting to the other drag acts and he was fabulous, really natural. At that point I thought 'yup, he's going to win it'.

Has everyone got a drag queen in them? Or was Spence special?
I could teach anyone to do an act, but I doubt they'd be as good as Spence. Spence had great talent and great charisma, and you can't teach that. Spence is a natural entertainer. He's always making gags. We just had to focus that into a drag act.

Were you happy with the film? Did it seem fair to you?
The whole thing was a terrifying experience, and they have captured that. They've done us proud. I think the director has done a superb job.

Did Faking It make you change what you think about being a drag queen?
Before Faking It I had lost some of my confidence. I didn't feel talented. Teaching Spence made me realise how much I know. That made me more confident and that has improved my act. I'm not falling back on routines now. I feel that I can be more dangerous. I feel like I have achieved something really big.

Do you think you could learn to Fake It as a weapons expert on a warship?
I would probably find it as difficult as Spence found becoming a drag act ... but yes, I think I could do it.
