Faker This content can be viewed on 4Broadband Phil Deane

I don't think I have changed at all. Maybe I take a bit more notice of motorsport, but I was always a big fan. I've got a motorsport licence out of it, so that is something. I would like to continue with motorsport, but it is a money thing. To do a season of Renault racing would cost about £30,000. As part of the Faking It training, they taught me how to get sponsorship. I have already approached three companies in Lincoln, but they all are waiting to see the programme before they commit.

Doing Faking It hasn't made me think differently. From what I have heard, I come across as arrogant in the film, so when I see it, maybe I'll take a step back. But I think that I'm a good listener.
Mentor Duncan Vercoe

What's the biggest difficulty learning to be a racing driver?
The two biggest things are speed and focus. You've got to cope with the speed and you have got to stay focused. You need to have miles under your belt and you need commitment to the cause.

What was the biggest crisis during the four weeks?
It was a crisis all the way through. The crisis started on day one and continued all the way through. You see the other fakers and they are 100% committed to what they are doing. Phil was a harmless enough chap… but to complete this challenge, you'd have to be so committed.

Before meeting Phil were you confident that the challenge was doable?
I was confident we could get whoever our faker was through the track stuff. That is doable as long as the faker has reasonable balance and hand-eye coordination.

If our Faker had had the passion of the guy from the Drag Queen programme [Spence Bowdler], and the hand-eye coordination of Phil, I think we could have got through it easily.

Did you enjoy being involved in Faking It?
Yup… it was a great challenge for all of us. For myself, Phil Bennett, John Pratt, Tony Jardine: it was tremendous to take all our experience and see how much we could teach in 5 weeks.

I think on the track Phil did reasonably well. It is an intimidating situation. He was in front of 8000 people. He was in a car that was pretty new to him. He was up against 9 other people who were all desperate to win.

Do you think you could learn to Fake It as a games tester?
I think I could. Absolutely. You have to have a winner's mentality and I think I have got that. It's got to be a piece of piss, just flicking a few fingers. Oh no ... I'm beginning to sound like Phil now.
