Maximillian Devereaux

How did you get involved in Faking It?
I saw some flyers at the National Chess League. Then I got a Chess Federation newletter with a flyer in. Seeing the flyer for the second time made me act. I thought it would be good to experience something different.

What was the highest point of the four weeks?
Winning the tournament has to be the high point. At that point I didn't know I hadn't Faked It. It was a great feeling. I really felt part of the team.

What was the lowest point in the four weeks?
It was when I was on tour. I had a week to go. I didn't feel I was making enough progress. The players were a handful. I was fed up with the whole thing.

What did you think the biggest obstacle would be?
I thought the biggest obstacle would be interacting with the team. Despite the practical jokes, they were pretty good. They are used to being in a team situation. They are used to obeying instructions. Even when it was obvious that I knew nothing, I was still the one wearing the tracksuit bottoms!

What did the biggest obstacle turn out to be?
I failed to roughen up my voice. I could do it with a voice coach but as soon as I got in the thick of things I reverted to normal. Also, I never managed to look comfortable on the touch line. That was the thing that really let me down.

Did you find it hard learning to read the game?
You get a totally different view from down on the touchline. It is much easier to get a good idea of what is going on with a TV overhead picture.

Wally always said 'wrong but strong'. It doesn't matter what you are saying, as long as you are shouting.

Did the team wind you up sometimes?
Chalfont didn't at all. They were a bit older.

Brentford were a young side. They were very excited when they went on tour. It is a jaunt for them. They really got me riled. I had to learn not to take it personally but by that time they had already seen they could get a reaction out of me, so it was too late.

Did you enjoy being a manager?
Not really, though I enjoyed the whole experience immensely. It has made me much more interested in watching football on TV.

A lot of people have noticed that I am much more at ease among large groups. That is the major benefit I have got from Faking It.
