After 10 years at Chicago's County General Hospital, Attending Physician Dr John Carter has risen to a role of respect and moral leadership in the emergency room.
He says goodbye to the ER at the end of this series, however, reuniting with his wife Kem after the stillbirth of their son, and heading out to Africa.

Two new interns, including Ray Barnett, arrive in the ER too.
