Dr Carter
Carter are Kovac are still working with a corps of doctors in the Congo, although the country's long civil war threatens to curtail their efforts, and places their lives in danger.

Abby's struggles with her troubled family and her tumultuous relationship with Carter weigh on her. When they break up, she stops drinking and smoking, and turns her professional life around by returning to med school.

Romano gets himself a new look after being fitted with a hook for his missing arm, and new second-year resident Archie Morris is slightly overwhelmed by the workings of County General.

Recently elevated to Chief of Staff, Dr Kerry Weaver brings her questionable management talents with her as everyone's new boss, although more is revealed about her personal life when trouble hits her partner Sandy and their newly born son.

Despite an opportunity to escape the oppressive atmosphere of the ER, Dr Gregory Pratt decides to stay where he's needed most. He continues his relationship with Dr Jing-Mei Chen who has to cope with his wandering eye, especially when new med student Neela Ragostra comes on the scene.

Chen needn't worry though. Dr Michael Gallant is more than willing to take Neela under his wing, until he learns he's to be posted to Iraq.

Attending physician Dr Susan Lewis has readjusted to the emergency room after a few years away. It's as if she never left, as she copes with one disaster after another.

British expat and single mum Dr Elizabeth Corday, a surgical attending, is on the road to recovering from her husband Dr Mark Greene's death and is ready to date again.

And Luka comes back from the Congo, instantly taking a shine to new nurse Sam Taggart and becoming a father-figure for her nine-year-old son, Alex. That's before Sam's ex comes back on the scene, that is.

Carter's back from Africa too at the end of the series - complete with new, pregnant girlfriend Kem. Although in true ER-style, their happiness doesn't last for long...
