Young, scruffy, and sometimes shifty, Dr Ray Barnett is a talented doctor by day and a rock musician by night.
His underhand behaviour gets him into trouble not only at work but also romantically, when he falls for Dr Neela Rasgotra who's married to Dr Michael Gallant.
In Series 12, Ray's put in the unenviable position of having to choose between his dedication as a doctor and his passion for music when his band goes on tour. He chooses the band but they drop him and persuade him to go back to the ER - he agrees.
When Neela's husband is killed, Ray uses the opportunity to get close to her, but to no avail as she gets involved with new arrival Dr Tony Gates.
Bitter and obsessed, he ends up in an accident after an argument with Tony. His legs are amputated after he's hit by a truck, and he leaves the ER to return home to Baton Rouge.
