Despite the stick, the limp and the fear of discrimination, Kerry Weaver arrives as Chief Resident in Series 2, striving to the top to become hospital Chief of Staff and one of the most influential characters in the ER.
Professionalism is what she portrays, and her personal life remains a mystery until later series.
She clashes with Doug Ross and Susan Lewis over patient care and admin policies, and competes against Mark Greene when she first gets there.
However, her sympathetic side is revealed when she defends Jeanie Boulet, a physician's assistant with HIV, so that she can remain working in the ER against the other doctors' approval.
She has a brief affair with Ellis West, an MD working on contract, which doesn't last as it becomes more apparent that she's attracted to women.
In denial, however, and believing it will damage her career, she ends up having a secret relationship with psychiatrist Kim Legaspi who is openly gay. Kim can't grasp why Weaver won't open up, and so they split.
It's only when Sandy Lopez openly snogs Weaver in front of everyone at County that the truth about her sexuality comes out.
Sandy and Weaver have a child, Henry, together but after Sandy dies from fighting a fire, a custody battle ensues between Weaver and Sandy's parents.
Weaver eventually wins, although struggling to find time with her son she departs the ER in Series 13 and heads to Florida to be a health talk-show host.
