Cast - Previous - John Carter
Throughout his time in the ER, Carter grows from a stuttering, shy, third-year student in Series 1 into a mature doctor facing danger not only in Chicago but also in the depths of Africa.
He snubs his family and their wealth to pursue his goals and becomes a hero in many different ways at County, including working free for a year when there's no funding available for him to switch from surgery to emergency medicine.
Things don't go to well for Carter in Series 6 when he gets stabbed in the back, together with his colleague Lucy Knight, by a schizophrenic. She dies and he survives but feeling guilty, and suffering in physical pain, he develops a narcotic addiction and reluctantly heads to rehab.
Not so lucky in love at the beginning of his career, he has flings with Harper Tracey and Abbey Keaton later on. Carter also develops a crush on Anna Del Amico, which comes to nothing, and then has dalliances with Roxanne Please, Lucy Knight, Rena Truillo and Susan Lewis.
His relationship with Abbey Lockhart gets serious but proves to be doomed when both their families' issues disrupt the relationship. He ends up going to the Congo to join Luka Kovac on a Doctors without Borders charity programme and sets up a HIV/AIDS clinic with funding from his family's charity foundation.
In spite of nearly getting himself killed, he meets Makemba 'Kem' Likasu. After Kem loses their child, they split, but eventually start afresh in Darfur in Series 11.
