Strong-willed, intelligent and dedicated to the job, Carol Hathaway proves she's not one to be messed around with.
Almost immediately she is rushed to hospital for taking an overdose in a failed suicide attempt. It seems Dr Doug Ross could have been the cause. Once back at work, she keeps her distance from the doctor - a hard task for any woman!
She gets engaged to John "Tag" Tagilieri, an orthopedic surgeon, but he decides not to go through with the wedding, believing she doesn't love him as much as he loves her.
After that, Carol gets involved with Ray "Shep" Sheppard but when he loses his work partner in a fire, his change of personality causes their relationship to end.
Things aren't looking good for Carol in Series 3. Not only does she have financial difficulties, but a labour dispute forces her to choose between her friends and hospital admin.
She then accidentally transfuses the wrong blood into a patient. The patient dies and although it's not clear whether it's her fault, Carol feels guilty about not being punished, spills the beans to the press and is suspended.
After being held hostage by Ewan Mcgregor in her local shop, she rekindles her relationship with Doug as he helps her through her MCAT exams. She passes, with flying colours.
When Doug leaves for Seattle, she decides to stay in Chicago despite being pregnant with his twins.
After a brief affair with Luka Kovac, whilst treating a woman dying of cancer and helping the family to cope, she leaves County at the end of Series 6 and reunites with Doug.
