Cast - Current - Sam Taggart
She's a feisty one, that there Nurse Taggart. Professional, experienced and self-assured, you certainly wouldn't mess with her - although she does have a softer side too.
Having replaced Abby Lockhart as head nurse, Sam is also a single mother.
She had her son, Alex, when she was just 15 and has raised him mostly on her own, having to move around the country to escape Alex's violent father, Steve.
Fiercely protective over her son, Sam becomes concerned when Alex develops a friendship with Luka Kovac. It's not long before things develop between Sam and Kovac too, and they move in together.
Their relationship doesn't last though - Luka wants more kids but Sam announces she's done with them.
Never one for the quiet life, Sam is used as a hostage by Steve to escape the ER in Series 12. He then bundles her into a van, with Alex, and heads to Canada.
Sam eventually escapes with Alex but not before she grabs Steve's gun and finishes him off for good.
After getting back to Chicago and sorting out all the legal issues around Steve's death, things settle down a little for Sam, but not for Alex who starts stealing and setting houses on fire.
That doesn't stop Sam from dating a dishy Chicago policeman, before finally getting it together with Tony Gates.
