Sadly, asking the police to investigate one of the most powerful men in New York proves impossible.
Nick doesn’t have time to be disappointed as another scandal hits the Darling family in the shape of a sex tape. Blackmailers want $1m in exchange for the tape but which member of the family is the ‘star’? Nick suspects it’s Patrick, caught with his transsexual lover, but he denies it calling sex tapes "unromantic". Jeremy knows all about sex tapes but hasn’t been in one and Juliet says it couldn’t be her because she’s a virgin!
That leaves Karen, and even though she denies it, further evidence from the Aussie blackmailers proves it’s her on the tape and Nick decides it’s best to pay up. Karen asks him to keep it quiet and visit her Italian banker to get the cash from a huge family vault. As Nick waits at the meeting point, the hapless blackmailers tell him another bidder has paid $2m and the deal is off.
Still with the cash in his bag Nick gets a call from Patrick’s panicked chauffeur, asking Nick to deal with a car crash the Senator-to-be has caused. Patrick is drunk and upset about having to dump his lover to protect his political career – a career he may lose if he doesn’t show up to an event to announce he is running for office. Exhausted at running around after the family, Nick returns home to find a courier on his doorstep. They hand over Karen’s sex tape saying that it will not go on the internet and that the secret bidder was Simon Elder. Is Nick getting dragged in to the battle of wits between Simon and Tripp or is Simon really more a friend than an enemy?
