Dutch dies in a mysterious plane crash and as Nick takes his wife Lisa and daughter Kiki to the funeral, the Darling family block his way. The Darlings finally notice and let him through but are more interested in talking to the assembled press rather than expressing any real grief, especially Brian Darling the sarcastic Reverend conducting the funeral.

All of them are icons of modern day celebrity vices: ambition, infidelity, laziness, drug abuse and vanity, which is not lost on Tripp. He needs an honest voice in the family and wants Nick. Tripp is a charming man, tugging Nick’s heart strings about his father and giving $10 million to a charity of Nick’s choice if he accepts. Nick has little choice and it’s not long until the family's controversial antics are exposed.

Jeremy is arrested, Juliet is fired from her role in a play (even though Tripp is bankrolling it) and Patrick is being blackmailed by his transsexual lover. All this in the first afternoon of his new job. Worse for Nick’s personal life Karen Darling is embarrassingly obvious about her feelings towards him, announcing in front of her fiancé that he 'de-flowered' her. The least of his worries is the fact Brian Darling hates him.

So just as Nick thinks he’s made a huge mistake the remains of the plane his father died in is discovered and the police suspect murder. Could one of the Darlings have had something to do with it? Each of them has something to hide that the family lawyer would have known so Nick is determined to remain working for the Darlings until he discovers the truth...
