Optimism for Blaine recovery
David Blaine has endured another night without sleep, according to a statement made by his medical team this afternoon. The problem is caused by the stomach cramps and general discomfort that are accompanying the painstaking re-feeding process.
Despite these problems, Blaine has said spoken of his confidence in his medical treatment. Blaine is receiving round-the-clock care from a team headed by clinical nutrition expert Professor Powell-Tuck. It is still impossible to confirm any long-term effects, but Professor Powell-Tuck expects that there should be a full recovery.
Last night Blaine experienced a drop in his body’s phosphate levels, which is in keeping with the re-feeding syndrome he is experiencing. Careful monitoring and corrective action have so far kept this expected abnormality within controlled limits. Too big a fall in the body’s level of phosphates can cause hypophosphateaemia. The condition may cause fits, ‘pins and needles’ sensation and, in extreme cases, death.
Mr. Blaine's blood test results this morning indicate very satisfactory progress.
Gradual re-feeding is continuing in the form of a nutritionally complete drink, with close monitoring to ascertain how Blaine’s body is responding. The quantity given to Blaine is gradually being increased.
The statement also said that Blaine will remain in hospital at least for the remainder of the week.
