The Falklands War

Argentina invaded the British overseas territory in the Falklands Islands on April 2 1982. News of the invasion was confirmed on the UK mainland thanks to a message sent by a ham radio operator broadcasting from Goose Green on East Falkland Island.

The resulting conflict saw heavy casualties, most notably when the British sank the Argentine cruiser the General Belgrano with the loss of over 300 lives.

Successful SAS operations, and naval superiority helped the British army to victory by June 20, and incidentally helped Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher win the next UK general election.
