Turin Brakes

We had only heard the acoustic verison but then Turin Brakes played us the full band version of their new single 'Painkiller' and we saw that it was good. Very good. That sort of wake-up-the-next-day-still-humming-the-damn-thing good. Sloping melancholic acoustic indie goodness.

Waiting for their turn on stage, Turin boys Olly and Gale made a big mistake: they talked to us.

What are your plans for 2003? G: Touring the world – Japan, America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and England quite a few times. And back again. Twice. What have you been listening to? Cornelius. Stevie Wonder. Bonnie Prince Billy. Boards Of Canada. Talk Talk. Who do you rate among your contemporaries? G: Elbow. What was the first record you ever bought? O: Five star – Systematic. G: Chas & Dave Greatest Hits. Oh yeah – your personal favourite off that album? ‘Goocha’. Ever been to a gig you’re embarrassed about? O: I used to see Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine quite a lot. At the time I thought they were brilliant. I listened to an old cassette of them a while ago…I don’t know what was wrong with me. Ever been arrested? O: I used to be in a graf crew when I was 16 who did some very beautiful pieces in the streets of London. And we got arrested and put in prison for a day. After that I decided to make music instead. Gale? G: Busted but not arrested. It was a really cold day in France. The sniffer dogs were on holiday so they pulled out everything off the bus. And we had to stand there for two hours. The very last bags they pulled out were the stash bags. The police were kinda cool. They just fined us and said, “The next time – just say ‘yes’”. Can you do human Beatbox? O: Yeah. I’ve been waiting years to be asked this question. Click here to hear. Tell us one amazing fact O: It doesn’t matter how heavy an aeroplane is as long as the wings are big enough and the correct shape and enough thrust it will take off. Um, cheers
