Bez

We
were honoured this week when one of the greatest music idols of the
twentieth century graced the humble Born Sloppy house. The mogul of
Madchester, the baron of baggy - - Bez from the Happy Mondays himself!
Although confined to a cage for most of the show, Bez showed
he was up for anything: be it dancing with the Audio Bullys or fighting
with the audience. A real character, a true rock legend, and a good
laugh. He will be sorely missed*
*n.b. not that he's like, dead or anything, just he
won't be on any other episodes of Born Sloppy.

We chatted with the man himself backstage. This is what happened...
What are listening to at the moment? Because it’s
been Christmas I’ve gone absolutely fruit. Cuz I’ve had
loads of people round I’ve been through every record in the
house. Ranging from ragga to folk music…breakbeat…reggae,
Elvis, a bit of Woodie Guthrie, yeah, yeah, the whole shududdle really.
Who do you rate at the moment? I’ve seen a
few good bands, live, full of energy, no way whatsoever manufactured.
With the record industry as it is, I don’t think a lot of them
are being seen as they should. What do you like to put on
to chill out? I like African, world music when I’m
at home. It’s easy listening. What's your tipple?
I drink anything really. Mostly spirits. Vodka. Brandy. The lot. I’m
a top shelfer with a top shelf hangover. Were you a teenage
rebel? Yeah, undoubtedly. Have you ever been arrested?
Yeah, loads of times [laughs]. For what kind
of stuff? Oh all sorts. From petty crime, violence, all sorts.
All youthful misadventures. Ever been in a fight?
Yeah loads. I only had a right good kicking a few of weeks ago as
well off a big gang. What in the street? Yeah. I
normally have one fight or two a year. Not through any fault of mine,
you know, because I’m totally against it, you know what I mean?
It just seems to happen when…sometimes I just get picked on.
What did you dream of doing as a kid? Don’t
know. I never had dreams me. I’ve just kinda done things. Tell
us one amazing fact Yeah. The most amazing thing I’ve
ever seen – them little stick things that fly around at four
thousand miles an hour. Rods! Rods? These like things
that fly at six or seven thousand miles an hour. Invisible to the
naked eye, been caught on camera loads of times. Nobody knows where
they’re from. Like proper fucking alien. There’s this
guy that goes round spotting them. A proper fucking rod spotter. There’s
this film of one, 60 foot long, flying in and out of this hurricane.
That’s the most amazing thing I’ve heard.
