Back to the Drawing Board 20-Feb-2003
Anne Diamond and Jade Goody, together with Leslie 'Dirty Den' Grantham, are currently receiving art lessons from celebrated painter Mike Chaplin. On Monday's edition of the show, they each created a watercolour skyline of London, with mixed results…
Lesson One was 'Don't Concentrate on Detail', which Jade mastered almost immediately. The bubbly brunette soon called over Mike to exhibit her preliminary sketch.
"These are the trees," she pointed out, helpfully.
"Yes I can see that," he replied. "It's all perfectly… understandable."
Then it was time to add the colour. Mike was delighted with Anne's efforts, describing her painting as "soft and sexy". He went on to remark on the "baroque and intriguing" nature of Leslie Grantham's picture, but was somewhat at a loss when he came to comment on Jade's finished work.
"D'you think you were happier with the drawing stage?" he scrambled, as the disconsolate 21-year-old looked on.
"Yes, the only thing that stands out is the bridge, and that's 'cos you did that, if you're going to tell the truth." she replied.
Back in the studio, Anne received fulsome praise for her finished watercolour. Jade accused her of being a "dark horse", and there was even a suggestion from Richard that she must have been telling "porkies" about her novice status…
Both Richard and Judy, however, seemed to share some of Mike's reservations about Jade's painting. Richard pointed out that although Art usually moves forwards, "sometimes it moves backwards." Judy was slightly more sensitive in her approach.
"That's not your best effort, is it?" she suggested, sympathetically.
"No, it's disgusting," agreed a cheerful Jade. "I think my hands are a bit too heavy-handed for this delicate painting stuff!"
