Nadia's Story
Day 82, 12:15
Tuesday 17 August

The last few weeks have been quite a journey for Nadia Almada, the newly crowned queen of Big Brother 5.

One minute she's suffering from severe nicotine withdrawal and having screaming rows with Jason - the next she's emerging triumphant from the House, surrounded by adoring fans.

So how has she coped with all the excitement of winning Big Brother, and what is the real story behind her other incredible journey - her transformation from a boy called Jorge to the woman known to millions as Nadia?

According to the exclusive interview in heat magazine, Nadia revealed that she had always known there was "something different" about her. One of her early memories, when about five years old, was of getting a slap from her father after painting her nails red with her mum's varnish.

"I knew then there was something inside me that was different and I was never going to be like my brothers."

During her time in the house, Nadia took care to look as absolutely fabulous as circumstances would allow, even (famously) wearing high heels in the shower. Asked by heat if she used to dress up as a teenager, Nadia's answer revealed some of the pain she has endured during her transition from a boy to a woman.

"I would wear platform shoes and try to get away with what make-up I could... I was a bit singled out and bullied though."

It was only after she moved to the UK that she started thinking more and more seriously about becoming a woman. First working and living 'as a woman' in 1998, through to the final stage of the transformation in December 2003.

So has winning Big Brother affected how Nadia feels about herself? Yes, and in a very positive way, it appears.

"Before I went into the House, if I'd seen old photos of me splashed across the papers I'd have hated it. Now I'm strong enough to accept it. My confidence is stronger because I was embraced in such a beautiful way."

When asked what the other housemates had said to her about her 'secret', Nadia revealed that they had all been "amazing".

"Even Victor complimented me and said he shed a tear when I came out!"
