The Hills Have Eyes

Day -2, 10:04

The mysterious White Horse of Uffington was recently briefly upstaged by a new neighbour - a gigantic Big Brother eye!

Big Brother created a series of spectacular pieces of landscape art throughout the British countryside to herald the start of the new series.

For the first piece, a 300 ft representation of the BB eye symbol was painted onto the hillside in Uffington next to the ancient White Horse hill carving.

The White Horse is a huge figure carved into the hillside that dates back as far as 1,000 years BC. In contrast, the White Eye is a huge figure painted onto the hillside that dates only a few days BBB. (Before Big Brother.)

The National Trust gave permission for the construction of the eye, which was marked out over a period of eight hours using an environmentally friendly chalk based paint. After a brief period of time, the symbol was removed completely using high power water jets.

A second huge landscape construction took place at Urquhart Castle, in Scotland. Permission from Historic Scotland was granted for the temporary construction of a gigantic stone eye in the castle grounds overlooking Loch Ness. Approximately 15 tonnes of local limestone rock was used in the figure, which was removed by the crew after 48 hours.

All the landscape eye designs were temporary, but the shortest-lived construction was the Big Brother Sand Eye, at Cefn Sidan Beach, Camarthenshire. With a window between tides of only eight hours, a crew of six people took over six hours to create the 65 metre wide pattern, removing dry areas of sand to create darker patterns in the wet sand.

But the prize for the most unusual landscape BB eye goes to a crop circle in a private field in Oxfordshire. Using complex dot matrix patterns, the Big Brother crop circle took six aliens a total of seven hours to construct.

(Oh, alright then. It wasn't really aliens...)

The good news is that all this unusual artistic activity means only one thing. The national countdown to Big Brother has well and truly started. We'll keep you posted...
