The Libertines wre dubbed "the best new band in Britain", shortly after they released their first single. Well the hype might have dropped off but the band's quality certainly hasn't.
The four-piece, based in Bethnal green, London, is fronted by guitarist-vocalists Carl Bart and Pete Doherty and backed by John Hassall on bass and Gary Powell on drums, solidified their credentials with their second single 'Up The Bracket', after their rabble-rousing debut, 'You're a Waster', which despite being banned by Radio 1, still the Top 40.
The Libertine's music, influenced by various vibes from the 60s, 70s and 80s, gives them a sound much like a new blend of The Kinks, The Jam and The Smiths. Inevitable comparisons with The Strokes have dogged them but The Libertines seem prepared to live with that for now.
The Libertines' third single 'Time For Heroes' is out on January 13.
