Guillemots
Who are the Guillemots? Well 'Get Over It' if you don't know! The band really revolves around founder and main man Fyfe Dangerfield with various musicians turning up for random parts on different songs. Fyfe has actually been going for a while, writing songs in his native Birmingham since first band Senseless Prayer in 1999. They must have been alright as John Peel got them in for a session on his Radio 1 show but sadly mainstream success eluded them. Fyfe thought London would be a better place to try and make it in music so he moved there in 2002 meeting loads of jazz players to muck about in bands with.
INTERESTING FACT ALERT: A 'guillemot' is the plural noun for a group of seabirds and should be pronounced 'gillimott' without any comedy French accents.
Birds are in fact the source of inspiration for the bands music as well as their name. For example, their 2006 EP "From the Cliffs" continues the Guillemot theme, the bird's natural habitat being steep sea cliffs. In their MySpace page their influences are given as 'BIRDSONG first and foremost', although the only artist that all the band members have publicly stated as being an influence is Bjork.
Guillemots' debut album, Through The Windowpane was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize but lost out to some unknown act called Arctic Monkeys. The album that really made them was the recent 'Red' with big single 'Get Over It' which is the one we're all looking forward too in Western Super Mare.
