Duffy
Call her the 'New Amy Winehouse' or just a great singer in her own right, 2008 has definitely been Duffy's year. If you haven't heard Rockferry on the TV or radio then you must have been in a remote village without electricity all of this year: a village similar to the one Duffy grew up in if you believe rumours surrounding her.
She didn't grow up in the middle of nowhere of course; she grew up in a town called Nefyn in Wales where she soon started singing in various local bands. She thought she'd made it when she was asked to form a band in Switzerland but it didn't work out so she returned to Wales in 2003 and appeared Wawffactor, the Welsh version of Pop Idol (she came second by the way).
A bit gutted that nothing really came of her Wawffactor experience she went off to university in Chester. She sang in jazz clubs and recorded a three-song-EP in Welsh as well as appearing on two tracks of Mint Royale's album 'See You In The Morning.' Without really seeking fame her husky jazz tones got a lot of attention and she eventually met Suede guitarist and producer Bernard Butler. He loved the retro style of her songs and saw she was comfortable in the sound and look of the 1960s. So together they wrote and recorded Rockferry and unleashed it on the public earlier this year to jaw dropping success: 'Mercy' has been in the soundtrack to Smallville, Grey's Anantomy and Sex And The City: The Movie. Now breaking the States with her album, she is set to be a massive star so Weston Super Mare brace yourself for something truly special!
