channel 4 comedy news

You can leave your Save Scrubs Facebook groups well alone for another few weeks at least because Scrubs, the laugh out loud programme that invented its own genre – that’s “dramedy” by the way – is back for a seventh series. Woo! Yes, those hapless medical types from Sacred Heart hospital have returned, so be prepared for more comedy, more drama and more internal monologues (and hopefully less ‘How To Save A Life’ by The Fray).

Of course, the mainstay of the Scrubs cast were in the limelight before Scrubs’ popularity rocketed off into orbit - Zach Braff (J.D) directed and acted in Garden State opposite Natalie Portman, Sarah Chalke (Elliot) was cast as daughter Becky Conner in the hit comedy Roseanne in 1993, and Donald Faison (Turk) played Murray in Clueless – but what really put their names amongst the stars were the antics of Sacred Heart hospital. However, since the show began in 2001 there have been a fair few thespians stepping onto the set of Scrubs whose stars have been shining bright for some time now. So, take our hand as we take you on a brief tour through some of our favourite Scrubs cameo moments…

Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser, he’s had a diverse career to say the least. He’s had lows (George of the Jungle, Bedazzled), he’s had highs (Crash… California Man) and his role as Ben, Dr. Cox’s best friend, was definitely amongst the latter. Ben first appears in Scrubs in the first series after he pierces his hand with a nail-gun. He then begins treatment for leukaemia and returns to the show in the third series to help out at Dr. Cox’s son’s first birthday before he dies; something which Dr. Cox struggles to recover from.

Tom Cavanagh

You may not recognise the name, but if you’ve been a student in the last eight years you’re almost certainly going to recognise the face. For four years Tom Cavanagh played the protagonist in comedy drama Ed, which was a staple in Channel 4’s daytime schedule. Tom plays J.D’s brother Dan and has appeared in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh series of Scrubs. Dan always seemed to be the no-hoper out of the Dorian brothers, but in the seventh series it finally looks like he’s getting his act together.

Heather Locklear

Yes, Heather Locklear may have starred in Dynasty, Melrose Place and Spin City, but she’ll forever be remembered by Channel 4 Comedy by being Garth from Wayne’s World number one crush. In the second series of Scrubs, Heather attracted yet more crushes when she played Julie, a drugs-promotion agent. Julie hooked up with Dr. Cox before his ex-wife Jordan appeared.

Dick Van Dyke

Now, we’re not ones to shoot off complements left, right and centre, but Dick Van Dyke is a living legend! He’s featured in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Diagnosis: Murder and then in 2004 he played Dr. Townshend in Scrubs. Amazing.

Tara Reid

Zach Braff must be play one of the luckiest characters on TV because J.D seems to be dating a different hotty every other week. One such lovely lady that J.D has an on/off relationship with is Danni Sullivan, who’s played by Tara Reid from The Big Lebowski and American Pie. Danni, Jordan’s sister, appears in the majority of the third series and returns in series four to be quarantined after a patient’s symptoms resemble SARS.

Michael J. Fox

Back in 2004 Michael J. Fox made a welcome return to our screens after battling against Parkinson’s. The Back to the Future man featured in the third season of Scrubs as Dr. Kevin Casey, a skilled surgeon battling against OCD.

Heather Graham

Yet another stunner who couldn’t help but fall into J.D’s arms was Heather Graham’s Dr. Molly Clock. Dr. Clock was the hospital psychiatrist in season four who became Elliot’s mentor and Dr. Cox’s chief tormentor.

Matthew Perry

Ok, so he played Chandler in Friends – get over it! Matthew not only starred as Murray Marks in the series four episode ‘My Unicorn’, but he also directed it. Also, starring as Murray’s dad was Matthew’s real-life father John Perry.

Colin Farrell

In the fourth series episode ‘My Lucky Charm’, Colin Farrell played Billy Callahan, a barroom fighter who charms the staff of Sacred Heart. Anyone else think he may have been typecast here?

Mandy Moore

The Mandy Moore character Julie Quinn enters the Scrubs fray in the fifth series and what you know? She dates J.D! This is just getting ridiculous…
