Comedy Police Officer Bruceboy has been investigating comedian Simon Munnery. Here's his report:
"Reviewing Simon Munnery is a bit like going to Heaven, then knocking out a media-friendly soundbite for 'The Reader's Digest'.
"He's been called a 'comedian's comedian', but that refers to his tremendous talent rather than his cliquish ability to get fellow comics laughing and common punters bemused. He's been The Security Guard, a deliberately humourless gag merchant blissfully unaware of how hilarious his one-liners really are… Or Alan Parker Urban Warrior, a manic Mayall-esque madman trying to revolutionise the universe for, in the words of every adolescent including my former self, "something - um - a bit better"... Or The League Against Tedium, a despotic dickhead subverting mediaspeak in a way everyone from Mussolini to Alan Partridge could understand.
"But it's a fine line between character monologue and plain gimmickry, and consummate comic Si knows it. Which is why tonight - gags aside - he's playing himself. And that means chatting about his new-found fatherhood - with all the irony of Jack Dee. Laying into the hecklers - with all the feelgood vibes of Eddie Izzard. And ruminating on the state of the world - with all the righteous indignation of Alexei Sayle.
"Apologies for the name-checks. For ultimately, this is Simon's world and Simon's humour. And we're grateful to be a part of it… Funny, rude, silly, funny again - Simon ain't a comedian's comedian, he's our comedian. And whether he's screaming, muttering or playing the harmonica, he's one of the best. Maybe the best.
"And long may he reign."
