General
1. The YR.1 competition seeks to find the image that best defines Britain (including Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) at the beginning of the new millennium in five different categories - Home, Work, Play, Beauty and Fame. All entries must be photos taken in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man during 2000 or 2001.
2. The closing date by which all entries must be received is 5.00pm, Friday, 30th March 2001. Entries must be posted or sent electronically via the YR.1 website. Entries will not be accepted by hand at the offices of Channel Four Television, Illuminations
Television or any of the participating galleries.
3. The YR.1 competition is open to anyone who is a resident in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man of any age except employees of Channel Four Television, their agents, families, project sponsors and anyone professionally connected with the competition. Children under the age of sixteen must have a parent or guardian signature to class as permission on their entry form to qualify to enter. In the case of entry via the Internet, children under the age of sixteen will need to fax back a form, signed by their parent or guardian, which is printed off the website. Entry to the competition is deemed to be acceptance to be bound by the rules.
Entries
4. Each individual is permitted to enter a maximum of three different images in total across three different categories from the five outlined in Term 1. No individual image may be entered in more than one category. If more than three entries are received
only the first three images received will be accepted.
5. A maximum of three images will be accepted and a maximum of three entrants per household will be accepted. Channel Four Television reserve the right to cap the number of entries due to the time restrictions of processing.
6. It is possible to enter both by postal and digital routes provided that total images entered do not exceed three. Please indicate where requested on the entry form if entry has been made via both routes. Entrants must not submit any duplicate images across both postal and digital routes.
7. Each submission of images must be accompanied by an Official YR.1 entry form (no photocopies will be accepted). Please ensure the entry form is completed in full.
8. All entries are submitted at the owner's risk. The organisers cannot be held responsible for non-receipt, loss or damage to entries nor for any loss or damage resulting therefrom. Please note that proof of posting does not mean proof of receipt. Entries will not be returned.
Image Restrictions
9. Entries may comprise colour or black and white images.
10. Entrants must avoid including in their submitted photographs any works such as paintings, sculptures, posters etc. other than incidentally, without that artist's permission in writing (this may be required of you at the short-listing stage). Entrants must avoid including people in a way that may cause potential embarrassment to any third party featured without their written permission. Entries considered by the promoter to be obscene or in any other way unacceptable in terms of taste and decency will be disqualified.
Short-listed Candidates
11. No purchase is required to enter the competition but short-listed candidates will be requested by the organisers to send a negative or original digital file on disk of any of their submitted entries by special delivery for the purposes of the competition, the exhibition, any publication or publicity purposes. In the case of digital images the entrant must send a copy of the image on disk. All negatives will be returned by special delivery once they are no longer needed provided the organisers are supplied with a self-addressed envelope. Please note that the promoter is not responsible for loss or damage of the negative in the post.
Entering by Post
12. Submissions must be flat prints, unmounted, of minimum size of a passport photo and maximum size of A3 (420mm x 297mm / 11.75" x 16.5"). 13. The back of each print must be marked clearly with the category to which it is submitted and to which number on the entry form it corresponds (1,2 or 3).
14. Names or other means of author identification must not be written on any of the images submitted. Entries will not be accepted if the photographer/author is in any way identifiable from the image.
15. Picture orientation should be indicated on the back of the print by way of a black dot on the top left corner.
16. Entries should be posted to YR.1 Competition, PO Box 197, Twickenham, TW2 5FH.
Entering via the Internet
17. Images can be entered digitally by accessing the website www.channel4.com/yr1
18. If entries are sent digitally they must be JPEG or BMP images of a maximum 1MB file size which should be entered via the 'Submit' section of the website.
19. Online entries will be automatically labeled with all relevant information as filled in on the online entry form at submission. Entries will not be accepted if the photographer/author is
any way identifiable from the image.
20. Entrants must ensure that images are sent with the correct orientation at the point of submission.
Copyright
21. Each entrant must be the sole author and owners of the copyright in all of the pictures entered and have the original negatives or electronic file (if digital image) in their possession.
22. Entrants retain ownership of and copyright in their entries but the organisers reserve the right to display, reproduce and publish in any media any entry without payment for the sole purpose of the YR.1 event, competition and exhibition(s) and their respective promotion and publicity.
23. In addition, Channel Four Television reserves the world-wide right to reproduce entries in any book associated with the competition. The licence will be exclusive for one year from the 30 March 2001 and non-exclusive after that period. This means that you will not be entitled to have your photograph published anywhere from one year from the closing date of the competition.
24. Photographs are accepted on the understanding that they are not the result of a commercial commission and have not been previously published or submitted to any other event, exhibition or competition.
25. Channel Four Television reserves the right not to publish or exhibit the winning entries.
Judging & Prizes
26. Each category will be judged independently and the winning photograph from each category will be forwarded to the final, with one photograph being nominated as the overall winner. The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
27. Images submitted online will be judged online; images submitted by hard copy will be judged in the format as sent.
28. There is one prize of £1,000 for the winner of each category, and one main prize of £10,000 for the overall YR.1 winner.
29. Category winners and the overall winner will be formally announced during a live broadcast on Sunday 1st July 2001. Please note transmission dates are subject to change. Category winners will be notified before the final programme is transmitted on Channel 4 Television. Winners must not divulge this information to anyone before the broadcast. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any entrant who does not comply with this rule.
30. Each entrant must be available for the YR.1/ Channel Four programmes and any additional publicity before or after the winner is announced.
31. A list of the names and counties of winners can be received after 16 July 2001 by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to YR.1 Winners, PO Box 23175, London SW1X 7ZU.
