Paul joined the Royal Engineers in 1985, and after taking evening classes in photography, was given the job of photographer for the regiment. He followed up his time in the army by gaining an MA in Royal College of Art in 1997.
His initial foray into the military world has heavily influenced his photography, which plays on male stereotypes and questions what it is to be male. Within this field, his photographs are diverse - whether they involve multiple self-portraits within a male environment, men dressed up as women, action shots of men, reconstructions of men at war, or men at the urinal. Through his work he has challenged male stereotypes and how we react to them.
Paul also makes extensive use of the computer in digitally manipulating his photographs, in order to create the idea and impact that he wants to portray.
