Parr is one of the best-known and most controversial documentary photographers in Britain. He combines social documentary with a sharp sense of humour as indicated by the titles of his books: The Last Resort (1996), a study of Britons at the seaside, The Cost Of Living (1989), a study of Britain's expanding middle class and Bad Weather (1982), photographs of Britons coping with the country's inclement weather conditions.
Parr has developed an international reputation for his innovative imagery, his oblique approach to social documentary, and his input to photographic culture within the UK and abroad, believing that images of supermarkets, tourists, or the consumer objects that we buy, say far more about our culture than churches and sunsets. By capturing unflattering moments from ordinary lives, Parr's images are often perceived as cruel, cynical, brutal or exploitative.
Famous for capturing people in their environment, Parr is the ideal judge for the category Home.
